Žebříček právnických fakult v USA podle citací v odborných časopisech

Žebříčky právnických fakult mají vcelku dlouhou historii (v USA např. U.S.News) a ostatně i v ČR již nějakou dobu probíhají (LN a HN). Jedním z kritérií většiny seriózních žebříčků je jistě i odborná kvalita akademiků dané fakulty, což je opět možné měřit mnoha různými způsoby. Jedním z nich je i počet citací odborných článků napsaných akademickými členy fakulty v odborné literatuře. Toto kritérium z pohledu amerických právnických fakult poctivě prozkoumali profesoři z University of St. Thomas School of Law (Minnesota), a to pro tzv. “Scholarly Impact Score”, podle kterého následně sestavili žebříček "odborně nejvlivnějších" amerických právnických fakult.

“Scholarly Impact Score” se vypočítá v zásadě jako součet všech citací článků napsaných stálými akademickými členy dané fakulty (“tenured faculty members”) za posledních pět let. Zkoumali to myslím skrze Westlaw. Podrobněji k metodologii viz článek autorů v SSRN. 

The “Scholarly Impact Score” for a law faculty is calculated from the mean and the median of total law journal citations over the past five years to the work of tenured members of that law faculty.

Zřejmě původní autor dané metodologie, profesor Brian Leiter z University of Chicago Law School, výsledky krátce komentoval na svém blogu.

The weighted score represents the sum of the mean citations for the tenured faculty times 2, plus the faculty median.  Where the median is low relative to the immediate competition that's an indicator that a few highly cited faculty are carrying the school; in other cases, where the median is quite high, it's an indicator of more across the boards scholarly output.  By noting age, one can see that some faculties are heavily dependent on their most senior members for their citations.  Ties reflect the normalized weighted scores.

Odborný dopad dané fakulty jistě nelze omezit jen na publikace v odborných časopisech, resp. jejich citace, viz např. vliv na policy-making a legislativu nebo rozdílná kritéria u byznysově orientovaných disciplín. Zajímavější proto možná, jak uvádí Leiter (viz výše), bude “dynamika” dosahování odborných výsledků v rámci jednotlivých fakult. 

Zajímavé také je, že žebříček sestavili profesoři z fakulty, která se v rámci jejich metodologie umístila výrazně lépe, než dle standardních žebříčků. Podezřívat někoho z nekalostí ale jistě není na místě.

The most dramatically under-valued law school is the University of St. Thomas, which ranks inside the top 40 (at #39) for Scholarly Impact, while being relegated by U.S. News outside the top 100 (at #135) — a difference of 96 ordinal levels. Other schools that have made a scholarly impact at least 20 ordinal positions higher than in U.S. News are Cardozo, Brooklyn, San Diego, Hofstra, Pittsburgh, Chicago-Kent, Toledo, DePaul, Rutgers-Camden, and San Francisco.
